Big time.<\/p>\n<p>Through a litany of product announcements at the so-called I\/O annual conference in Mountain View, Calif. \u2014 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2016\/05\/allo-duo-apps-messaging-video.html\">messaging apps<\/a>, a personal virtual assistant and a voice-controlled speaker that connects you with it \u2014 the company basically said:<\/p>\n<p><em>We can do<\/em> <em>chatbots<\/em> <em>better than Facebook. We can be smarter at home than <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/alltechconsidered\/2014\/11\/06\/362088269\/amazon-wants-to-put-a-listening-speaker-in-your-home\">Amazon Echo<\/a>. Our personal assistant gets trained on Google search, which is more widely used than Microsoft&#8217;s Bing. We&#8217;ve got you covered on privacy; just like Apple, our new messaging service is getting end-to-end encryption.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Google has been under scrutiny from <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2016\/04\/20\/474961171\/eu-files-new-antitrust-charges-against-google-over-android-apps\">regulators in Europe<\/a> who say its position is too dominant and criticize Google for pulling consumers into bundles of its products.<\/p>\n<p>Well, it looks like Google won&#8217;t stop bundling anytime soon. The personal assistant, which will work through multiple devices, is an effort to deepen the relationship with customers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We want users to have an ongoing two-way dialogue with Google,&#8221; Pichai said about <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/googleblog.blogspot.com\/2016\/05\/io-building-next-evolution-of-google.html\">the personal assistant<\/a>. &#8220;We think of this as building each user their own individual Google.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Already 20 percent of queries on Google&#8217;s mobile app and Android phones are voice queries \u2014 people saying &#8220;OK Google&#8221; to summon an older assistant called <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.pcworld.com\/article\/2925716\/how-to-use-google-now-cards-7-tips-for-managing-what-they-show-you-when-and-why.html\">Google Now<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The company&#8217;s been working for years to listen better \u2014 get what you say when you&#8217;re in a noisy place, speaking slang like a human and not a robot, working to complete tasks. The assistant is being integrated into a new <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wired.com\/2016\/05\/googles-new-allo-messaging-app-gets-edge-ai\/\">chatbot app Allo<\/a> that helps you make dinner reservations or buy movie tickets.<\/p>\n<p>Google is also releasing a new device called <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2016\/5\/18\/11688376\/google-home-speaker-announced-virtual-assistant-io-2016\">Google Home<\/a> to help you manage your domestic life. The company wants Home \u2014 which looks kind of like a white plastic salt shaker \u2014 to have a place at your dinner table and be the all-knowing, helpful extended family you never had.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It draws on 17 years of innovation in organizing the world&#8217;s information to answer questions which are difficult for other assistants to handle,&#8221; said Vice President Mario Queiroz.<\/p>\n<p>Emphasis on <em>other<\/em>. Google leaders acknowledge: Amazon did it first, with the popular Echo.
