Pakistan&#8217;s Sachal Ensemble includes studio musicians from their country&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/04\/26\/306874889\/a-millionaire-saves-the-silenced-symphonies-of-pakistan\">once-healthy<\/a> film industry, which began to decline in the 1970s in a wave of political and religious pressure.<\/p>\n<p>With their audience at home close to eviscerated, the members of the Sachal Ensemble and their champion and impresario, banker <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/04\/26\/306874889\/a-millionaire-saves-the-silenced-symphonies-of-pakistan\">Izzat Majeed<\/a>, were casting about to find some way of appealing to an international audience. They wound up blending distinctly American jazz with South Asian instruments like sitar, sarod, tabla and <em>dholak<\/em> along with Western instruments that had long been incorporated into local music, like violin and guitar.<\/p>\n<p>The group&#8217;s road to a 2013 <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.jazz.org\/press\/music-from-pakistan-featuring-sachal-jazz-ensemble-jazz-at-lincoln-center-orchestra-with-wynton-marsalis\/\">collaboration<\/a> with Jazz At Lincoln Center became the subject of a documentary film, <em><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.songoflahoremovie.com\/\">Song of Lahore<\/a><\/em>, which will be in theaters in May. Perhaps unsurprisingly, their collaboration rides a rather <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/lists\/100-greatest-beatles-songs-20110919\/within-you-without-you-19691231\">George Harrison<\/a>ian psychedelic wave.<\/p>\n<p>The Easter Sunday <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2016\/03\/28\/472105520\/group-claims-responsibility-for-pakistan-attack-targeted-christians\">bombing<\/a> in Pakistan took place in the Sachal Ensemble&#8217;s hometown of Lahore, in an act of terrorism that seems to have been intended as an attack particularly on Christians there. Vivian Fernandes) has made something of a cottage industry in <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1bK5dzwhu-I\">repping<\/a> the harder-edged neighborhoods of his hometown, Mumbai \u2014 light-years away from the playgrounds of India&#8217;s <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/cities\/2014\/nov\/28\/mumbai-wealthy-elite-extremes-bollywood-parties-super-rich\">super-wealthy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The beat and backing tracks on this new song, &#8220;<em>Jungli Sher<\/em>&#8221; (Jungle Lions), tip toward the bombastic. But Divine&#8217;s flow is packed with brilliant internal rhymes and trenchant observations like &#8220;Hope is the rickshaw of the poor\/on which the rich cruise.&#8221; (To catch the translation, turn the subtitles to &#8220;English [United Kingdom]&#8221;.) It&#8217;s already been viewed on YouTube well over 2 million times. That&#8217;s a big ballad, but I still prefer the thoroughly African beats of his smash-hit ode to well-dressed men called &#8220;<em>Sap\u00e9s comme jamais<\/em>&#8221; (Dressed Like Never Before), featuring fellow rapper Niska.<\/p>\n<p>Being a <em>sapeur<\/em> \u2014 that is, an adherent to the <em>Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 des Ambianceurs et des Personnes \u00c9l\u00e9gantes<\/em> (The Society of Ambiance-Makers and Elegant People) \u2014 is a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/pictureshow\/2013\/05\/07\/181704510\/the-surprising-sartorial-culture-of-congolese-sapeurs\">way of life<\/a> for a certain stratum of Congolese men. And that is something that Ma\u00eetre Gims can claim as part of his heritage. They come from southern Israel and draw deeply from their Yemeni Jewish roots, not just in terms of the language they sing in \u2014 Yemeni Arabic \u2014 but also in their particular aesthetic.
