{"id":4262,"date":"2015-07-21T14:33:00","date_gmt":"2015-07-21T22:33:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/associatednews.info\/content\/fcc-set-to-approve-att-directv-merger\/4262\/"},"modified":"2015-07-21T14:33:00","modified_gmt":"2015-07-21T22:33:00","slug":"fcc-set-to-approve-att-directv-merger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/associatednews.info\/content\/fcc-set-to-approve-att-directv-merger\/","title":{"rendered":"FCC Set To Approve AT&amp;T-DirecTV Merger"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-style:italic;font-size:16px\">By  <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2015\/07\/21\/425111198\/fcc-set-to-approve-at-t-directv-merger?utm_medium=RSS&amp;utm_campaign=business\">Krishnadev Calamur<\/a><\/span>  <\/p>\n<p>FCC Chairman Tom Wheeler has circulated an order to his fellow commissioners on the Federal Communications Commission to approve the $48.5 billion merger between AT&amp;T and DirecTV.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Wheeler said the move would bring more competition to the broadband marketplace and benefit consumers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;If the conditions are approved by my colleagues, 12.5 million customer locations will have access to a competitive high-speed fiber connection,&#8221; Wheeler said. &#8220;This additional build-out is about 10 times the size of AT&amp;T&#8217;s current fiber-to-the-premise deployment, increases the entire nation&#8217;s residential fiber build by more than 40 percent, and more than triples the number of metropolitan areas AT&amp;T has announced plans to serve.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Under the terms of the order, AT&amp;T will not be allowed to place data caps on rivals offering video and other content, and it will be required to submit all completed interconnection agreements to the FCC.<\/p>\n<p><em>The Wall Street Journal<\/em> <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/us-authorities-near-end-of-at-t-directv-review-unlikely-to-block-deal-1431448987\">reports<\/a> that the Justice Department has signed off on the deal.<\/p>\n<p>The two companies <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2014\/05\/18\/313722371\/at-t-to-acquire-broadcast-provider-directv\">announced the merger<\/a> in May 2014. As NPR&#8217;s Jim Zarroli <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/2014\/05\/19\/313844184\/at-t-to-buy-directv-in-nearly-50-billion-deal\">reported at the time<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<div>\n<p>&#8220;The merger will unite one of the nation&#8217;s most powerful telecommunications companies with one of its leading pay-TV services. Together, the two companies will have 26 million pay-TV customers.
