\"\"<\/a>Writers from the Tribune Co. <\/em><\/span>discuss<\/span> who would be <\/em><\/span>the most effective<\/span> successor to former St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, who retired <\/em><\/span>three<\/span> days after the team won the World Series championship:<\/p>\n

The Cardinals <\/em><\/span>need to have<\/span> <\/em><\/span>someone<\/span> with <\/em><\/span>a lot more<\/span> than just people and managerial skills. They also <\/em><\/span>need<\/span> <\/em><\/span>somebody<\/span> with the gravitas to take over <\/em><\/span>a team<\/span> that just won the World Series.<\/p>\n

At the top of that short list <\/em><\/span>would be<\/span> former Cardinals catcher Joe Girardi. But he <\/em><\/span>presently<\/span> has his dream job with the New York Yankees. Next <\/em><\/span>could be<\/span> former Red Sox skipper Terry Francona, who was <\/em><\/span>run out of<\/span> Boston when the team blew the wild-card playoff spot <\/em><\/span>within<\/span> the final inning of the final game.<\/p>\n

But the frat-house <\/em><\/span>atmosphere<\/span> Francona presided over in Boston <\/em><\/span>won\u2019t<\/span> fly in St. Louis, where La Russa long ran the <\/em><\/span>tightest<\/span> clubhouse in baseball. If Francona <\/em><\/span>has any<\/span> desire to manage again and can <\/em><\/span>win over<\/span> management, the players and fans, he <\/em><\/span>might be a great fit.<\/span><\/p>\n
