\"\"<\/a>The <\/span>recently<\/span> launched Al-Hambra cruise ship sailed only <\/span>twice<\/span> on the Nile <\/span>before<\/span> President Hosni Mubarak was toppled in February and has been docked <\/span>since<\/span> then on the banks of the river, its <\/span>plush<\/span> fittings <\/span>accumulating<\/span> dust awaiting the return of <\/span>tourists<\/span>.<\/p>\n

Aswan, the <\/span>site<\/span> of majestic Pharaonic ruins and one of the most <\/span>renowned<\/span> stops on Egypt’s Nile cruises, has few of the <\/span>visitors<\/span> who <\/span>usually<\/span> throng its tree-lined river banks. Instead, <\/span>many<\/span> ships are moored waiting for customers.<\/p>\n

Of the <\/span>well over<\/span> 300 cruise liners <\/span>normally<\/span> touring this section of the world’s longest river, part of a tourist industry <\/span>that’s<\/span> a major source of <\/span>revenue<\/span> in Egypt, not more than <\/span>forty<\/span> are still setting sail, operators say.<\/p>\n

Tourist <\/span>figures<\/span> have plummeted, dealing a blow to the <\/span>countless<\/span> Egyptians whose livelihoods depend on the <\/span>fourteen<\/span> million or more <\/span>tourists<\/span> who once came to Egypt <\/span>yearly<\/span>, providing <\/span>1 in 8<\/span> jobs in a country beset by high unemployment.<\/span><\/p>\n
