But all that <\/span>happened<\/span> to get to that point when the game <\/span>eventually<\/span> ended also made it <\/span>probably the most<\/span> memorable.<\/p>\n

Playing <\/span>16<\/span> innings without scoring <\/span>a home run<\/span> <\/span>seems<\/span> <\/span>hard<\/span> to do, but not <\/span>after you<\/span> <\/span>think about<\/span> how inept the Rays <\/span>were<\/span> offensively, <\/span>getting<\/span> only <\/span>3<\/span> hits.<\/p>\n

<\/span>They’re<\/span> <\/span>the first<\/span> team in <\/span>MLB<\/span> history (going back to 1919) to play <\/span>sixteen<\/span> or more innings, and to get <\/span>50<\/span> at-bats, and get no more than <\/span>three<\/span> hits. They had only <\/span>6<\/span> base runners advanced only <\/span>three<\/span> of them to second base and <\/span>none<\/span> as far as <\/span>third<\/span>.<\/p>\n

The <\/span>eight<\/span> combined hits were the <\/span>least<\/span> for any major-league game of <\/span>fourteen<\/span> or more innings <\/span>in the<\/span> live-ball era, <\/span>as outlined by<\/span> the Elias Sports Bureau. <\/span><\/p>\n
