The most prominent involved bankers creating deposit and credit card accounts for millions of customers without their knowledge.<\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RES707746047\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>Wells Fargo was ordered to pay <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2016\/09\/08\/493130449\/wells-fargo-to-pay-around-190-million-over-fake-accounts-that-sparked-bonuses\">$185 million in penalties and fines<\/a> in 2016 for creating unwanted accounts by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2019\/03\/12\/702501160\/ceo-says-wells-fargo-has-transformed-after-scandals-lawmakers-are-skeptical\">Sloan testified<\/a> before Congress, assuring the House Financial Services Committee that &#8220;Wells Fargo is a better bank than it was three years ago, and we are working every day to become even better.&#8221;  <\/p>\n<p>But lawmakers from both political parties were skeptical.<\/p>\n<p>And a few days later, the company revealed in a filing to a government regulator that Sloan would be getting a $2 million bonus for 2018. <\/p>\n<aside>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RES707776210\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>That prompted California Democrat Maxine Waters, who runs the House Financial Services Committee, to call for him to be &#8220;shown the door.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The troubles have been mounting for Wells Fargo over the years.<\/p>\n<p>In an unrelated case, the consumer bureau also imposed a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2018\/04\/20\/604279604\/wells-fargo-hit-with-1-billion-in-fines-over-consumer-abuses\">$1 billion fine<\/a> against Wells Fargo for overcharging customers for mortgages and auto loans.
