The states are asking a court to review the EPA&#8217;s proposed actions, arguing that they violate the Clean Air Act.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not looking to pick a fight with the Trump administration, but when the stakes are this high for our families&#8217; health and our economic prosperity, we have a responsibility to do what is necessary to defend them,&#8221; California&#8217;s attorney general, Xavier Becerra, said.<\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RES607454200\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><!-- END ID=\"RES607525557\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>In <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/oag.ca.gov\/news\/press-releases\/california-and-states-representing-over-40-percent-us-car-market-sue-defend\">a news release<\/a>, the states said their lawsuit &#8220;seeks to set aside and hold unlawful the EPA&#8217;s effort to weaken the nation&#8217;s existing clean car rules &#8230; based on the fact that the EPA acted arbitrarily and capriciously, failed to follow its own regulations, and violated the Clean Air Act.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><!-- END ID=\"RES607581863\" CLASS=\"BUCKETWRAP INTERNALLINK INSETTWOCOLUMN INSET2COL \" --><\/p>\n<p>Specifically, the EPA is <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.federalregister.gov\/documents\/2018\/04\/13\/2018-07364\/mid-term-evaluation-of-greenhouse-gas-emissions-standards-for-model-year-2022-2025-light-duty\">reconsidering<\/a> Obama-era rules designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from cars. The regulations call for average fuel efficiency to increase to 54.5 mpg by 2025. However, the report notes, &#8220;both fuel prices and electric vehicle sales are in fact rising.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The legal battle between California and the EPA <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/04\/02\/598756591\/trump-s-plan-to-roll-back-epa-fuel-standards-could-face-legal-battles\">ultimately<\/a><a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/04\/02\/598756591\/trump-s-plan-to-roll-back-epa-fuel-standards-could-face-legal-battles\">could <\/a>lead to two competing emissions standards \u2014 one for California and the states that follow it, and another for the rest of the country.
