In a <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/azarijahromi\/status\/966237727627907073\">tweet<\/a> posted Wednesday, an Iranian official said that a test model for a &#8220;cloud-based digital currency&#8221; is being developed for submission to the Iranian banking system.<\/p>\n<p>The official, Mohammad-Javad Azari Jahromi, heads Iran&#8217;s Ministry of Information and Communications Technology. Jahromi made the announcement after a meeting with the state-owned Post Bank of Iran.<\/p>\n<p>It is not yet clear what role the currency will play in the Iranian banking system. In a statement reported by Iran Front Page news, the Central Bank of Iran highlighted the &#8220;highly unreliable and risky&#8221; nature of cryptocurrency markets. It warned that Iranians &#8220;may lose their financial assets&#8221; in a space marked by extreme volatility and &#8220;pyramid scheme&#8221;-like businesses.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes on the heels of Venezuela&#8217;s oil-backed &#8220;petro&#8221; cryptocurrency launch <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/2018\/02\/20\/587195926\/venezuela-set-to-launch-the-petro-its-new-cryptocurrency\">earlier this week<\/a>. Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro claims that the cryptocurrency has raised <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/article\/us-crypto-currencies-venezuela\/venezuela-says-launch-of-petro-cryptocurrency-raised-735-million-idUSKCN1G506F\">over $700 million<\/a> for the cash-strapped country. But <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cnbc.com\/2018\/02\/20\/venezuelas-new-bitcoin-oil-backed-cryprocurrency-launched-in-bid-to-save-economy.html\">doubts remain<\/a> over the currency&#8217;s long-term viability, as Venezuela <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.hks.harvard.edu\/centers\/cid\/publications\/faculty-working-papers\/venezuelan-oil-industry\">struggles to profit<\/a> from the oil reserves that are supposed to back it.<\/p>\n<p>There are fears that the rise of state-backed cryptocurrencies <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2018\/01\/03\/technology\/russia-venezuela-virtual-currencies.html\">could pose a challenge<\/a> to international efforts to regulate financial transactions and impose sanctions.
