The department said it&#8217;s inviting Uber to &#8220;seek a permit so their vehicles can operate legally in California.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, Uber started <a target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\" href=\"http:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/thetwo-way\/2016\/12\/15\/505679445\/uber-launches-self-driving-cars-in-california-over-states-objections\">offering rides<\/a> in self-driving cars in San Francisco without a permit for autonomous vehicles \u2014 defying state regulators.
