In response to the desperate situation in Japan, the U.S. State Department has advised citizens to avoid traveling to that country through April 1. The advisory may be extended in light of the deteriorating situation the Fukushima nuclear power plant.
As a result of the earthquake and resulting tsunami, Japan is experiencing rolling blackouts and shortages of food and water in many areas. Even the best planned trip may be affected by the massive rescue and aid operations.
Several U.S. air carriers are waiving fees for changing tickets and offering other accommodations to assist passengers. Travelers are also being encouraged to contact their destinations to make alternate plans in the wake of the turmoil.
Officials say travel this summer should not be affected; however, that depends on the situation at the nuclear facility. The best advice is to keep close watch as events unfold, and to delay any non-essential travel until reliable information is available.
