A late push by Mayor Kevin Johnson and a group of investors is aimed at keeping the Sacramento Kings from moving to Anaheim. The group has pitched a plan to the NBA’s Board of Governors to buy the team from the current owner, or for another team to be moved to Sacramento if the Kings leave.
Johnson says Sacramento has a great fan base, and that the team routinely plays to sell-out crowds. He also pointed out Sacramento is a top-20 television market. The Maloof family, which owns the team, speaks before the board Friday. A request to relocate may come as soon as Monday.
The Maloofs don’t necessarily want to move the team, but the family has spent a bundle trying to persuade Sacramento to build a new arena. Everyone agrees Power Balance Pavilion, the team’s current home, must be replaced no matter which team or owner combination remains in the city.
