WEST SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP)  The Independence Day weekend is just days away and travel experts at AAA say in Massachusetts more than one million people are planning to take a trip for the long weekend.  They expect 85 percent of those travelers to drive to their destination.

AAA Pioneer Valley representatives told 22News, before you hit the road, you should get overall checkup on your car to make sure your fluids are all full and your tire pressure is ready for the trip.

AAA classifies the 4th of July travel period as July 1st through July 5th warning Wednesday you should expect high volumes of traffic to begin.  With 42 million people traveling nationwide, AAA recommends you do your driving very early in the morning, or at night to avoid the heavy traffic times of the day.

If you are hitting the road, there are major road construction project to watch out for in Hampden County.  In West Springfield, the Route 5 tunnel southbound is open to all traffic, but both lanes are expected to be closed on the northbound side for at least a portion of Wednesday, according to the MassDOT.  Also in West Springfield, you will still be dealing with the Memorial Ave rotary work, but all lane closures aren’t scheduled for another week there.

As for the I-91 project, lane closures there aren’t expected to start until July 12th.
