Flint travel baseball team to CABA World Series. The Foutchs Strike Zone 16-under travel baseball team won the Continental Amateur Baseball Association state title last weekend to qualify for the CABA World Series July 19-26 in Marietta, Georgia. The team, made up primarily of kids from Genesee County, reached the Mickey Mantle World Series last summer. The CABA World Series is new to us and we have had it on our radar but we didnt expect to get the opportunity in just our second year of existence, said head coach Ben Almasy, the former varsity baseball coach at Mt. Morris. It is a great opportunity for our young team to get some great exposure.
Firebirds hire strength coach. The Flint Firebirds announced on Wednesday, June 24, the hire of Rich Tremblay as the clubs full-time strength and conditioning coach. Tremblay, owner and head strength and conditioning coach at Athlete Strength and Performance, an athlete training facility in Shelby Township, brings 12 years of experience to the team that includes work with more than 100 hockey players. Having a full-time strength and conditioning coach to work with our players is one of the most crucial aspects to the future success of our program and we couldnt be happier to have him on board, Firebirds coach John Gruden said in a release.
Another all-state honor. Flint Powers Catholic utility player Kelsie Swanson was added to the Michigan High School Softball Coaches Association all-state list, earning first team honors in Division 2 for her .607 batting average, with eight triples, three home runs and 35 RBIs. Swanson, a four-year player on the varsity, is signed to play at Oakland University next season. Powers Catholic lost to Goodrich in district semifinals this season.
Area bowling figure honored in Las Vegas.Flint man Mark Voight was honored with the Victor Lerner Memorial medal and inducted into the Bowling Proprietors Association of America Hall of Fame on Thursday, June 25, at the International Bowl Expo in Las Vegas. Voight was recognized for his years managing the Community Bowling Centers chain in Michigan and individual lifetime achievement and support of the bowling industry.
Opehlia Bonner race next month. The annual Opehlia Bonner Scholarship Fund Races are scheduled for Saturday, July 25, on the University of Michigan-Flint campus in downtown Flint. The 5K, 8K and 1 mile races, organized by the Christ Fellowship Missionary Baptist Church, are slated to start at 8 am Registration, which includes a T-shirt, is $15 by July 20 and $20 after.
