Users of mobile devices operating Google’s Android OS can expect an initial release of Adobe’s Flash Player 10.2 available for download on March 18. Statements by Adobe and Google suggest a high degree of cooperation. Google will be adding Flash Player 10.2 to upcoming updates and Adobe’s Flash Player will be automatically installed in future Android releases. Integrating flash adds support for more video codecs, browser effects such as smoother scrolling and improved support for touchscreens. There has often been a lag between software updates and their appearance for mobile systems. The short gap between the release of 10.2 for desktops on February 8 and its availability for mobile devices on March 18 indicates the maturing and rising importance of the mobile device market. The future of Flash Player 10.2 for tablet PCs is unknown, but there are hints that the cooperation between Adobe and Google will force Apple’s hand into providing Flash support.
