Dominican Republic Presidential Election

Dominican Republic: A regional poll taken at the end of February showed voters are inclined to choose former President Hipolito Mejia to win the Dominican Revolutionary Party (PRD) primary elections. The poll by Asisa Research Group, shows the current president of the PRD, Miguel Vargas would get about 36% of the vote, while Mejia is at approximately 64%. The support for Mejia is on the rise recently across the region.

The same poll included the subject of the incumbent Dominican Liberation Party (PLD). If President Fernandez chose to run again, he would take 75% of the vote in the primary, while his closest challenger, Danilo Medina would get only 13%. The new constitution of the Dominican Republic has some uncertainties, and at this time it is unclear whether or not President Fernandez will be able to run for a third term. Time will tell. Presidential elections are May 16, 2012.
