See Michael J. Fox Try On the New Self-Lacing Nike Shoes Inspired By 'Back to the Future'

UPDATE: Well, today is the day Nike promised us a pair of self-lacing sneakers just like the ones Marty McFly wore in Back to the Future II. So where are they?

When reached for comment, Nike did confirm to ABC News that the first pair of self-lacing sneakers does indeed exist and they are in New York City today. Why New York City? Most likely to coincide with an anniversary celebration tonight featuring a cast reunion followed by a Q&A and a screening of Back to the Future II.

There’s no word on whether the sneakers will be available to the public or if they were created solely to show off on Back to the Future Day, but good news is we’ll have those answers by the end of the day.

UPDATE 2: Michael J. Fox has revealed a letter sent to him today from Nike designer Tinker Hatfield, confirming the sneakers are on their way.

The letter I received from Tinker today. Thanks @Nike pic.twitter.com/UIolXrkUVC

— Michael J. Fox (@realmikefox) October 21, 2015

UPDATE 3: And here’s Michael J. Fox trying them on. If you want your own pair, you’re going to have to have a ton of money to throw down: They are making more, but they will only be available through an auction, with proceeds going to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research.

Previously…

As soon as the clock struck midnight and 2015 strolled into our lives, various sites and news media were all over the connection between the year and the Back to the Future sequel in which Marty (Michael J. Fox) and Doc (Christopher Lloyd) travel from the ’80s to the year 2015 because, as Doc warns Marty, “Something’s got to be done about your kids!”

Not surprisingly, director Robert Zemeckis’ vision of 2015 is a bit different from the real 2015 — most notably there are no flying cars and the Jaws franchise is (thankfully) not releasing its 19th installment. But some stuff is close to actually happening, and of course we’re talking about those spiffy power-lacing Nike shoes that Marty rocks out in the movie.

[embedded content]

Fans have been on Nike for years to create a power-lacing sneaker, and the company promised it would deliver one in the year 2015 to coincide with the year the movie is set in. So… where is it?

Well, give it another month. Max Erdenberger, a former art director with ties to Nike, posted this image to Twitter seeminly revealing Nike’s plans to finally release the power-lacing sneaker this October 21, 2015, which also happens to be the exact date Marty McFly travels to in the Back to the Future sequel.

October 21, 2015 pic.twitter.com/uOCp5L8BXz

— Max Erdenberger (@thebetamax) September 9, 2015

Erdenberger followed up this tweet with one saying he doesn’t have much to report, but knowing Nike has been working hard to make these sneakers a reality in 2015 means chances are good they will be available to own this October.

How many will be available and how hard will it be to obtain a pair? The word is still out, but last time Nike did this — using a replica pair minus the power laces — they only made 1500 pairs available with all proceeds going towards the Michael J. Fox Foundation.

Earlier this year Nike’s Tinker Hatfield (pictured above, via NikeKicks.com) addressed this very topic at a trade show, saying they’re working real hard on getting the self-lacing shoes on the market as soon as possible, but that they still have “11 and two-thirds months left in 2015.”

So Nike is definitely planning on delivering you Back to the Future nerds (raises hand) your precious power-lacing sneakers (yes!) at some point this year, and October 21 seems like the choice date for such a reveal. In the meantime, check out some of the Nike MAG 2015 US Patent Papers to see what the shoes will look like and how they’ll work, with additional patent images here.

Who’s buying a pair?

Songs We Love: Buika Feat. Jason Mraz, 'Carry Your Own Weight'

Maria Concepción Balboa Buika, the vocalist known simply as Buika has an extraordinary voice. It’s based in flamenco, which she heard as a child on the Spanish island of Mallorca. But layered on top of that are a whole range of popular influences including jazz and R&B (she was once a Tina Turner impersonator in Las Vegas).

Buika has been gathering up new fans with every release since her first internationally released album in 2005. The album she dedicated to Mexican ranchera singer Chavela Vargas (2009’s El Último Trago, recorded with the Cuban pianist, Chucho Valdés) was a high-water mark, a mix of artistic interpretation and unbridled passion that almost made her a star. Yet after hearing her newest album Vivir Sin Miedo, I don’t think stardom is what is on her mind: she is obviously far more concerned about using her voice to explore an ever-expanding range of genres and styles.

The album features instrumentation that I would more expect from a singer like Cassandra Wilson, with Buika’s voice now floating amidst shimmering electric guitars and bluesy organ swirls. She is singing flawlessly in English, and of course there are now hints of hip-hop, not unexpected since she is of a generation that grew up with the music.

As “Carry Your Own Weight” make clear, Buika has also attracted some high profile admirers — in this case, Jason Mraz. Check out the video, then download the album and welcome to the amazing world of music that is Buika.

Vivir Sin Miedo is out now on Warner Music Latina.

'Star Wars: The Force Awakens' Trailer: Watch It Now

The new trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens is here — come and watch it.

[embedded content]

What’s so brilliant about these trailers so far is that they’re essentially showing us different angles of the same scenes, revealing little bits of info each time without showing much of the movie at all.

For the latest trailer, it’s really all about the voices. We hear Rey speak, we hear Finn speak and we hear Kylo Ren speak, all for the first time. Each line reveals a little something about the character — one’s a loner, one wants to fight for a cause and one wants to finish what someone else started.

And when it comes to Han, Luke and Leia, well here’s the big moment for all you old-schoolers.

What else did we learn?

Most badass moment? Yup, Kylo Ren and his troops lookin’ all mean and nasty in the pouring rain. Hands down.

We know Kylo Ren will fight without his mask on at some point.

And don’t you love how they’ve slowly revealed that one scene three separate ways. Each time we see it, there’s something new about it.

And we also know that Han and Chewbacca will be causing trouble, seen here in a scene where it looks like they’ve been captured.

Plus we now know that being captured by the First Order ain’t fun at all. Check out Kylo Ren torturing Oscar Isaac’s Poe Dameron something fierce.

On a lighter note, how cool is it to see Rey and Finn hangin’ on the Millennium Falcon for the first time?

And that Poe Dameron and Finn have a bit of a Han and Luke friendship going on.

What do you think of the trailer? Tell us your favorite moments.

Songs We Love: Jus Now Feat. Bunji Garlin & Ms. Dynamite, 'Cyah Help It'

Jus Now is a production duo split between the UK and Trinidad & Tobago, 4500 miles apart but with a long legacy of musical exchange. The credit for modern dance music defined as “multicultural” often goes to the communicative power of digital media, but the Jus Now link-up speaks to an older tradition. As far back as 1948, the fresh-off-the-boat Lord Kitchener — Aldwyn Roberts, at the time one of Trinidad’s top calypsonians — was voicing “London Is the Place For Me” on the quayside of Tilbury Docks. Fast forward through decades of Notting Hill Carnivals, punks making roots-reggae records, plus the 2 tone ’80s, and we arrive at the Caribbean’s biggest influence on contemporary British music: the cross-pollination of acid-house raves, West Indian shebeens and sound-system dances which begat jungle (aka drum & bass). This music’s early ’90s birth marked the beginnings of a wild lineage that would morph into a continuum of British street-rave sounds of the coming decades — garage, grime, dubstep —leading to today’s constantly mutating “bass music” tag. Which brings us back to Jus Now.

Sam Interface, the English half of the duo, is a drum & bass producer from Bristol, a place known for its long line of junglists, with heavy hitters like Roni Size, Krust and Die all hailing from the city. (Interface has worked with the latter.) LAZAbeam (born: Keshav Chandradath Singh), a Port of Spain-based soca producer, makes up the Trini part of the team. And on “Cyah Help It,” each brings top-drawer vocal talents from their respective scenes, with Ms. Dynamite repping for the UK and Bunji Garlin for Trinidad.

The track opens with dramatic filtered chants, expectant percussion and stabs, the intro peaking with overdriven power chords and a lick of almost operatic synth pomp that begs the question, “What if Phantom Of The Opera had been re-imagined with autotune and daggering?” Yet before that debatable idea can settle in, the drums drop, and Ms. Dynamite and Bunji Garlin take turns riding a rhythm that switches up between low-end badman stagger and UK Funky-inflected syncopation. A mixture of soundbwoy killing and party starting, it’s a combination of style and pattern that keeps things unexpected, an uninhibited bruk-out destined to shell down bashment parties that are not limited by tempo or genre. If a carnival parade was to trample across the Atlantic, all the way from St. Pauls to Independence Square, this could be its 2015 anthem.

Cyah Help It EP is out on Oct 23 on Feel Up.
