Case Goes to Jury In Bonds Trial

As the first day of jury deliberations took place Friday in the perjury trial of baseball star Barry Bonds, the man who allegedly provided Bonds with steroids is getting out of jail. Greg Anderson, Bonds’ former trainer, has been in federal prison for almost two years for refusing to testify in the case. A judge has agreed to release Anderson, a convicted steroids dealer, now that the trial is winding down.

Bonds is on trial for lying to a grand jury in 2003 during an investigation of Bay Area Laboratory Cooperative (BALCO), a company with connections to Anderson. The Home Run King has denied ever knowingly using performance enhancing drugs, but said Anderson used to treat him with substances that had only nicknames like “the clear.” Bonds claims he was unaware the substances were steroids.

Bonds appeared in court briefly Friday during discussion about a secret audio recording made in the Giants’ clubhouse by Steve Hoskins, Bonds’ former valet. In the recording, Hoskins talks about steroids with Anderson.
