Warner Bros. big Comic-Con panel isn’t until Saturday morning, but it would seem like the Internet has already scooped what would certainly have been one of their big reveals: Ben Affleck will star in, co-write, and direct a solo Batman movie.
This isn’t exactly coming out of left field since rumors about a new Batman movie have been swirling for a while, but now we have some finer details about who all is involved. Affleck’s writing partner on the project will be Geoff Johns, one of the most important figures in DC Comics. He’s not only a prolific writer in print and the Chief Creative Officer of DC Comics, but he’s also currently a writer and producer on the surprisingly great DC Comics shows Arrow and The Flash.
The news gets better from there, too. According to Deadline, Affleck and Johns will be turning in their script before the summer is over, but that they won’t actually be shooting the movie until probably a year later at the earliest. So this project isn’t just some rush job being churned out to fill a release date slot. They’re taking their time with this one, which is understandable considering they’ve got Christopher Nolan’s shoes to fill.
So while this solo Batman movie may not come out until 2018 at the earliest (it won’t come out before 2017’s Justice League), fans can see Affleck’s caped crusader twice in 2016 thanks to both Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and an appearance in Suicide Squad.
