NBA Draft Pool Thinning Out

Harrison Barnes’ announcement that he would return for his sophomore season at North Carolina has further reduced the pool of top players available for the NBA 2011 draft.

Prior to the start of the season, Harrison was predicted to be the No.1 pick, but a rocky start dropped his value before he regained his status in March. He adds his name to the list of other top players who have opted out of this year’s draft, including Tar Heel teammates Tyler Zeller and John Henson. Jared Sullinger of Ohio State, Perry Jones of Baylor, Jeremy Lamb of Connecticut and Kris Joseph of Syracuse have all withdrawn their names from consideration. The mass exodus may have something to do with a looming NBA lockout.

Other possible lottery picks who have yet to declare their intentions are Kentucky’s Brandon Knight and Terence Jones. The lean draft this year could result in a bonanza in 2012, especially for a team like the Celtics, who have an extra pick.
