This past Sunday, a total of six states passed the $4 per gallon mark, with New York being the latest one. The nations capital, Washington, D.C., was also affected by the growing gas prices, also hitting the $4 mark. The national average has increased over the last 26 days, the highest being found in Hawaii at $4.48 per gallon. Other states currently at the $4 mark are Alaska, California, Connecticut, and Illinois.
The unrest in Libya has been a major factor in these rising prices, cutting off exports from that country once it’s citizens turned to violence. Gas prices have surged by 22 percent since that incident, and 42 percent since the Labor Day holiday. Even though consumers have cut back in the amount of gas they are getting, it is still expected by the government that prices will continue to climb through out the summer months as people vacation.
