Barry Bonds Found Guilty For Obstruction of Justice

The MLB record holder in homeruns, Barry Bonds, was convicted of obstruction of justice Wednesday. The verdict came after a 12-day trial. He was also being tried on three other counts; however, the jury was unable to come to a unanimous decision regarding those charges and the judge issued a mistrial. The obstruction of justice charge stems back to statements that Bonds made to a grand jury in 2003 and whether or not he had knowingly injected steroids. In order to be convicted, the jury had to determine whether or not his testimony had purposely misled the grand jury.

Bonds could face up to 10 years in prison for his conviction although federal guidelines only call for 15-21 months. Similar offenders in steroid cases have received up to one year of home confinement. Bonds defense lawyers immediately requested that the charges be thrown out but the judge is yet to rule on the request.
