Japan’s No 2 Reactor Leaking Radiation

In efforts to avert the most horrific nuclear disaster since Three Mile Island and Chernobyl, Tokyo Electric Power Company, TEPCO, are working to seal a fracture in the damaged number 2 reactor’s concrete pit. Authorities in Japan have reported radiation leaking at levels of 1,000 millisieverts per hour.

The Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency, NISA, cannot say with any certainty that this is the lone source of the radiation levels in the ocean near the reactor. They are conducting further investigations to rule out any other sources. They have confirmed no cracks in any of the five remaining reactors.

TEPCO has filled the crack with concrete but radiation continues to leak. Due to this continued seepage they will try using a water absorbing polymer to contain any radioactive water from further contaminating the water outside the plant.

The NISA plans to keep the debilitated reactor cool by a provisional air-cooling system or other alternative means.
