Director James Cameron told an audience in Las Vegas that he has another innovation up his sleeve for “Avatar 2.” Speaking at CinemaCon 2011, Cameron said the next Avatar will be shot at increased film speed which reduces “strobing,” an effect that causes blurring on moving images, especially when working in 3-D.
Cameron demonstrated the technique by comparing footage shot at 24 frames per second (the standard speed), 48 fps and 60 fps. The differences were startling. He compared 3-D quality to looking out a window and said that the increased film speed had effectively taken the glass out of the window. Increasing projection speed will also help reduce bluriness, a complaint being heard from 3-D moviegoers. Cameron said the technique will sharpen 2-D films as well.
“Avatar,” the highest-grossing film in history, set the standard for the rush of new, 3-D films. The next installment is still a few years away from opening in theaters.
