More Water Leaking From Damaged Reactor

More radioactive water is leaking from reactors at the damaged Fukushima nuclear power plant in Japan. Workers are battling to pump the contaminated water from the facility in an effort to gain control of the situation. The water is believed to be causing radiation levels to soar at the complex and in the seawater along the coastline next to the facility. Plutonium was also detected in the soil around the plant, but officials say the amounts are too small to be a threat to public health.

Another earthquake hit the country Monday, the latest of scores of quakes and aftershocks that have occurred since March 11 when a 9.0 magnitude quake spawned a massive tsunami. Monday’s quake registered 6.5. Hundreds of thousands remain in rescue shelters as the cleanup continues.
