Geraldine Ferraro

Geraldine Ferraro, the first female Vice Presidential candidate, died at age 75 on March 26, 2011. She died after a 12 year battle with multiple myeloma. Geraldine Ferraro broke political ground when she ran for the Democratic VP ticket with Walter Mondale in 1984.

Ferraro was also the first woman in her family to complete college. She went on to become a grade school teacher, while going to school nights to get a law degree. She eventually became the Assistant DA in Queens County, NY specializing in child abuse and domestic violence.

She was also a member of the US House of Representatives. Ferraro also made a run for a senate seat from New York once in 1992 and again in 1998, losing both times.
