Late Seaon Ski Surge Expected in California

Ski season in California won’t officially be over for at least another month and recent snowstorms mean some areas will continue to see good conditions into summer. Resorts at Big Bear have idled snow making equipment, and Lake Tahoe has seen nearly six feet of new snow on top of 38 feet that has already fallen this winter. Both resorts are expecting big crowds for the rest of the season.

Climatologists say weather patterns this year are going against history. Usually, cooler weather in the north results in warmer weather in the south. That is not happening, and business has rebounded at Mountain High Resort in the San Bernardino Mountains following a fresh 26 inches of snow. January was relatively warm and dry.

Although not on pace with last year’s record 8 million visitors, California’s 26 resorts have still experienced solid attendance and are expecting to see around 7 million skiers and snowboarders.
